Format handling
Robin optimizes JPG, PNG and GIF files, including animated GIFs. The base plugin converts JPG and PNG images to WebP without limits on the number of images. GIFs are optimized but are not converted to WebP or AVIF. Robin Pro adds AVIF support; AVIF can produce smaller files than WebP in many cases while maintaining high image quality. Browsers that support a modern format can receive it, while other browsers receive the original image format.
Compression modes
- Lossless: Makes smaller file-size savings and suits logos, illustrations and images where fidelity matters.
- Lossy: Applies stronger compression while keeping quality changes minimal.
- High compression: Targets greater file-size reduction for image-heavy or performance-focused pages.
- Custom compression: Lets you set the quality level.
- PageSpeed compression: Uses options tuned for PageSpeed and performance audits.
Backups and EXIF data
Robin can shop a copy of each original image before optimization. With backups enabled, you can restore a file or optimize it again using different compression settings. EXIF data can be removed to reduce file size and improve privacy, or preserved for photography and other processes that use image metadata.
Set up the optimization workflow
- Install Robin Pro in WordPress and review the image optimization settings.
- Choose a compression mode and decide whether to remove or preserve EXIF data.
- Select automatic optimization for new uploads or bulk processing for images already in the Media Library.
- Enable the Pro options you need, such as AVIF conversion, PageSpeed compression, background processing or custom-folder optimization.
- Enable backups if you want to restore original files or re-optimize images with different settings.
Background optimization processes images gradually through scheduled tasks without blocking the WordPress administration interface. Custom-folder optimization can include images outside the Media Library, such as theme and extension assets. Robin Pro also delivers the WP-CLI commands wp robin optimize, wp robin stop and wp robin status, with scopes for the Media Library, custom folders and NextGEN.
