Connect Google Drive to WordPress

Embedder For Google Drive lets WordPress authors select Drive items while editing posts and pages. Premium and Enterprise add folder embedding, calendar support, and expanded browsing. Enterprise includes the Premium features and adds intranet integration.

Display documents and folders

Files can appear inline in Google’s read-only interactive viewer, link to editable files that open in the same or a new browser tab, or be offered as downloads where supported. Supported types include PDF, Word files, ZIP files, videos, pictures, and native Google documents such as spreadsheets, drawings, and forms. Native Google formats can be linked or embedded, but direct downloads are not available for them.

Premium folder embeds show a list of files from a Drive folder, so authors can keep the collection current in Drive. Enterprise adds interactive embedded folders that let users preview files and open subfolders without leaving the site.

Premium browsing and calendars

Premium’s Drive browser has My Drive, Recent Files, Starred, and Shared With Me tabs. Authors can browse or search for files while preparing WordPress content. They can also select Google Calendars to embed on the site or provide as ICAL or XML download links. Premium includes support and updates for one year.

Enterprise intranet functions

Enterprise adds Drive-backed file attachments to individual intranet pages and posts, allowing each page or post to have its own attachments. It also supports Team Drives, now called Shared Drives, for organizations that use shared Drive storage.

Sharing and user access

Google Drive sharing settings determine who can view embedded files. For public access, a document generally needs a setting such as Anyone with the link can view, or a higher level of access. The appropriate setting depends on the file and its intended audience. The add-on can be used on public websites and private intranets, including WordPress multisite networks.

Installation and setup

1. Install and activate Embedder For Google Drive Premium or Enterprise.
2. Install and configure the required Google Apps Login plugin in its free, Premium, or Enterprise version.
3. Connect the relevant Google Drive access and review document sharing settings.
4. Edit a WordPress post or page, then use the Drive file selection interface to locate a document, folder, or calendar.
5. Choose an inline embed, viewer link, editable-file link, download link, or calendar show where supported.
6. Preview the content and confirm that the intended visitors have permission to access the selected Drive items.
