Organize WordPress media with real folders
Media Library Folders Pro for WordPress adds actual folders to the WordPress Media Library. Instead of relying only on the default month- and year-based structure, site administrators can make folders and arrange media according to a site’s content, projects, products, or other organizational needs.
The plugin works with the WordPress Media Library rather than replacing it. Its drag-and-drop interface works with moving, copying, renaming, and deleting documents and folders. This gives administrators a practical way to manage large collections of uploaded media and locate files more easily.
Folder management and media workflows
- Create and create Media Library folders with names that match your site’s structure.
- Move, copy, rename, and delete files and folders through drag and drop.
- Use File Name View Mode when searching for images in very large folders.
- Regenerate thumbnails for selected media.
- Synchronize folders and files when a folder is moved or uploaded through FTP.
- Specify image ALT and TITLE attributes during upload for SEO image management.
- Organize folders with categories.
Enhanced Media Library and Media Library Folders Pro categories are interchangeable. The extension also supports Advanced Custom Fields and multisite installations, making it suitable for sites with structured content and more than one WordPress site in a network.
Editor, gallery, and store integrations
MLF integration lets editors choose and add images to posts and pages from the editor. Administrators can create MaxGalleria and NextGEN galleries directly from MLF folders. The plugin also supports adding images to a WooCommerce product gallery, connecting folder organization with product-media workflows.
These tools can help separate product images, editorial assets, campaign files, and other media while keeping them available through familiar WordPress editing processes. The folder structure and the Media Library continue to work together rather than requiring a separate media system.
Block Direct Access
The Pro edition includes Block Direct Access for selected Media Library files. Its controls can protect unlimited media files, display a customized no-access page, block Google Search from indexing media files, and prevent file hotlinking.
- Restrict access to Media Library files.
- Disable copying and right-click actions.
- Generate and limit private URLs.
- Restrict private URLs by IP address.
When activated from the Block Direct Access tab in the Pro settings, the feature makes a protected-content folder. On Apache websites, activation also updates the site’s .htaccess file to make that folder inaccessible to internet customers. Nginx and IIS sites require manual server-configuration changes as described in the plugin instructions.
Installation and first steps
- Download and install Media Library Folders Pro for WordPress.
- Activate the plugin in WordPress.
- Open the Media Library Folders Pro menu in the WordPress dashboard.
- Review the uploads folder and create folders for your preferred media structure.
- Use drag and drop to arrange files, or synchronize folders uploaded through FTP.
- Configure Block Direct Access separately if selected media requires restricted access.
After activation, the plugin’s folder interface is available from the WordPress dashboard while the standard Media Library remains part of the process.
