WordPress plugin
WP SmartCrop Pro
WP SmartCrop crops images to the dimensions set by your CSS while preserving their proportions. A chosen focal point guides the crop, keeping that area in view and as close as possible to a rule-of-thirds position as the image’s aspect ratio changes.

CSS determines the show dimensions. For a basic check, the plugin instructions suggest a block-level image with display: block, width: 100%, and a fixed height. Adjust those rules to fit your theme and layout. Smart Cropping can also be disabled for individual images.
Responsive behavior and controls
The same image can be cropped for cards, featured images, galleries, or post content with various aspect ratios. WP SmartCrop supports WordPress responsive srcset and legacy cropped thumbnail sizes, which can use the selected focal point without changes to existing CSS. The plugin also describes an image preloader and HTML5 and CSS3 support with HTML4 and CSS2 fallback for older browsers.
Pro automatic selection
Automatic focal-point selection is presented as a Pro capability, while the plugin FAQ describes that feature as in development. The supplied information does not confirm its current availability. The documented workflow is to choose each image’s focal point in the Media Library.
