Search in Place Pro: Live Search for Custom WordPress Content

Real-time search for broader WordPress content

Search in Place Pro extends the search experience beyond standard posts and pages. It displays results as visitors enter their search criteria, helping them review and refine queries without waiting for repeated page reloads. The Pro version is designed for sites that need to search custom post types, including content created by ecommerce and other WordPress extensions.

The plugin converts site search boxes into Search in Place boxes and can also add additional search fields with the [search-in-place-form] shortcode. A separate shortcode option can limit a search to the current page by using the in_current_page="1" attribute.

Search custom content and related information

Pro search can include metadata, taxonomies, and the author show name associated with posts, pages, or custom post types. You can define additional post types for consideration, making the search more suitable for websites that use WordPress as a content management system, ecommerce platform, or other structured publishing environment.

  • Search custom post types and their associated taxonomies.
  • Search metadata and author display names.
  • Add post types and taxonomies through the add-on options.
  • Use available integrations for WooCommerce, WP e-Commerce, Jigoshop, and Ready! Ecommerce Shopping Cart.

For supported ecommerce extensions, the relevant post types and taxonomies can be added through the corresponding integration option. This makes it possible to include product-related content in the search experience when those integrations are used.

Clear results and flexible presentation

Search results are displayed dynamically with AJAX technology. Results can be grouped by post type, with labels identifying posts, pages, or other post types. The plugin can highlight searched terms in results and on resulting pages, helping visitors see why a result matches their query.

You can limit the number of elements shown in dynamic results and pick whether searches should match all entered terms or any of them. The search results page can include labels, while results are displayed in a popup window by default. The premium version also allows results to appear inside a div tag within page content.

Placement and editor options

Additional search boxes can be placed with the shortcode, including a current-page search box. Integrations are available for Gutenberg and Elementor, and a widget is available for Page Builder by SiteOrigin. For other editors, the shortcode includes the placement method described for the plugin.

Search box colors can be customized, and the plugin offers a different navigation option for visitors searching the website. These controls help adapt the search interface to the structure and presentation of the site.

Practical uses

  • Help visitors find products or other custom content without leaving the current page.
  • Search structured information stored in metadata and taxonomies.
  • Expose author-related content through author display name searches.
  • Guide visitors with grouped result labels and highlighted search terms.
  • Limit dynamic results to keep the search display focused.

Installation and setup

Install Search in Place Pro in the WordPress website, then open its settings to configure the content included in searches. Add additional post types or taxonomies where required, set the result count, choose the all-terms or any-terms behavior, and configure labels, colors, highlighting, and result presentation.

After configuration, use the existing website search boxes or insert [search-in-place-form] where an additional search field is needed. Use the current-page attribute when the search should be limited to the page containing the form.
